Adorable and small, this little lantern is the perfect way to add soft light to any space. My father built this lantern frame from figured Curly Maple pieces that were remnants from some of my previous projects, meaning the lantern is not only pretty, but also sustainably crafted. Each interior panel is made from locally-handmade mulberry paper featuring real pieces of dried leaves. The interior latticework (or Kumiko) is made out of Basswood.
This lantern is made in a traditional Kumiko style, an ancient Japanese technique where pieces of wood are grooved and mortised by hand tools before fitting the individual pieces together. It is a labor-intensive process which requires patience and careful attention-to-detail. Kumiko typically refers to the latticework of the lantern’s panels which can be made in all sorts of designs and patterns, but for these lanterns, my father made the lattice components more simple to showcase the unique artwork.
The lantern features a candelabra bulb with a switch on the plug-in cord. The top panel of the lantern can be gently lifted up to change the bulb as needed. Be careful not to try and remove any of the side panels since those are all securely attached to the lantern frame and are not meant to be removed.
* Please note that these lanterns are crafted by hand out of natural solid wood and thus may show slight imperfections that we think highlight its beauty and uniqueness.
Thank you!
